The Personal Ramblings of Samm Diep

Category Archives: Vegas

I can see my good friend, the sun, for the first time today since I left Denver.

I snapped this photo just as I was leaving for the airport on Wednesday.

my buds are peeking

I already miss my boy like crazy. Here is a picture of him also taken just before I left. He’s so regal.

Vegas, deep in thought

We did get to stop by my favorite bakery yesterday, Jack’s Bakery, where I picked up some seasonal holiday loaf. They bake the most beautiful, festive loaves for each season. AND THEY’RE YUMMY!!!

I would love to ship some to my friend and amazing photographer Lara of PieWacket to take some fun photos of. This is right up her alley!

My pics don’t do it much justice but here ya go:

Today we took the loafies to get our pictures taken with Santa. They were very well behaved. They sat still the entire time. They even let us put Santa hats on them.

Vegas and I had two takes because of his little tongue, but I kinda like the tongue pic better anyway.

Take One

Take Two

I almost forgot to post these pics from work this year. These were the only two structures I built. They don’t compare to last year’s fortresses, but it was still fun. Building boxes is so theraputic…

Last week, I accompanied Hikle, my current roommate (bff and former co-worker) to his company xmas party. We’ve been such good friends for so long that we’re often each other’s stand-in date for the evening when necessary.

Here’s us from this year’s xmas party (December 13, 2009):

And here is us from the 2001 xmas party (December 18, 2001):

While looking for these photos, I stumbled upon some more pics I thought would be fun to share here.

It’s that time of year again…

For me, that means I hang up my pool cues for a month and work a “real job” during December. I’m really looking forward to it now that I know what I’m doing this year. I filled in for a day last week and it all came back to me.

My mom and I did our part in replenishing our economy by supporting black friday this week. I spent some more money today at Target for Project: Organize the Craft Room so-we-can-get-this-mattress-out-of-the-hallway. I also picked up some snacks for work next week. I’m very excited about it the purchase of four different kinds of snack mixes that I have tossed together: Sweet & Spicy, Fruit & Berry, Tropical Fruit & Berry, and the Zen Party.

Since last I wrote, my BeFriStEnd, Michael, moved in for a few months with his pooch (and Vegas’s long-time friend), Mr. Tripp. I’m looking forward to be spending more time with him.

I couldn’t wait to get home to start Body Pump 71. When I left town a month ago they were just wrapping up with BP 70. I was going 4-5 days a week and hated to leave. I even downloaded all the tracks and tried doing the exercises at Mike’s house. It just wasn’t the same. I was glad to see my favorite instructor and work out buddy, Estella, again. I don’t really like BP 71 as much or the music really but there’s a lot more cardio and my legs have been burning the last couple times I’ve done it.

The other exciting purchase I made on Friday was the Simple Soups Deck of 50 easy soup recipes. I’m planning to keep a large vat of fresh, homemade soup readily available at all times this month. I think the first one I’m going to try is #12 – Cream of Portabella Mushroom Soup. YUM! I’ll share the recipe here if it turns out okay.

V and I had ourselves a lovely past couple of weekends.

It began last weekend with a trip to the doggy park with our friends Robbie, Steph, and Cassius. Apparently, the recent wet year has led to an evolved trail which now requires us to trek through muddy grounds to come full circle. Vegas and Cassius didn’t seem to mind.

These little fuzzies were everywhere!

This past weekend, we made some zucchini bread with our friends Dolly & Ben. Ben didn’t know what to think of that 7 pound second place prize ribbon zucchini! It was not suitable for the bread but we picked up some new zucchini and we were good to go.

Finally, as a special treat, I went to see the TS & TS2 double feature IN 3-D!!!! with Robert & Summer. Man! I love those movies!!! I can’t wait until June 18, 2010!!!

I’ve got a bad case of missing Vegas today (that’s Vegas my pooch, NOT the town).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s been fun spending so much time in MN, being all domestic and stuff. For instance, today I made a pork roast with steamed broccoli and I always like to keep fresh cut fruit readily available in the fridge. I also whipped up a big vat of my favorite pasta salad for poker night at the club tomorrow.

I just wish it weren’t so danged humid here and that, of course, my pooch could be here to join us. I’ll be home for a few days at the end of the month to bring him back for the fourth. I’ll probably be spending most of the summer out here since I don’t really have much planned back home. Let’s hope the weather dries up soon.

You know I always post this stuff here when it’s requested of me, so if you feel so inspired, post or email me your list of 25.

[in no particular order, guess that’s why it’s called “random”]

  1. I love fruity gum. I despise minty gum. Yuck!
  2. I secretly like it when people call me “Sammi.” I would never introduce myself as such, but it’s very endearing to me, especially since that’s what most of the pool world refers to me as.
  3. I am Chinese-American. I was born in Vietnam.
  4. My moniker “Cherry Bomb” was given to me by my good friend and extremely talented pool player, Robert Rodriguez.
  5. At age 16, I rolled and totaled my first car (a white 1986 Toyota Corolla hatchback). I only had it for two weeks. I broke the front axle and launched my violin about 20 feet from the car. Amazingly, no one was hurt. Unfortunately, we only had liability on it then. Jerry was not so happy.
  6. Oh yeah, I played the violin from age of 9 until ???. I even taught private lessons for six years after high school. I loved it!
  7. I can’t whistle.
  8. I was once in a Video Professor infomercial. Don’t ask.
  9. I began playing pool at age 14 while ditching orchestra rehearsals with my friends. Don’t tell my mom.
  10. I went through a swing dancing phase where I danced five nights a week for a solid year and half. Man, I was in shape then!
  11. I can only wink with my left eye.
  12. I really like gummy bears.
  13. I keep a cheese blog with my bf, cheesyadventures.com. It’s not so up-to-date at the moment. mmmmmmm… cheese…..
  14. I am an only child.
  15. I love the smell of coffee but can’t stand the taste of it.
  16. I have a distinct mole on my left eye lid that is usually disguised with make up.
  17. I’m a Kakuro junkie. I started with Sudoku, but I prefer Kakuro’s now. It’s like Sudoku on vitamins.
  18. I’ve always been a huge Kenny Loggins fan. In fact, I got to hang out with his band after a concert at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, CO when I was 20. Still debating on whether or not I should’ve listed this one.
  19. I’m obsessed with Paul Frank, particularly Julius the Monkey (and most monkeys for that matter). PF is my favorite designer!
  20. Vegas, my awesome, beautiful, very well-behaved 7 year old white lab, was diagnosed with Lymphoma on Thanksgiving. He’s since been on chemo and is currently in remission. My ex and I have joint custody and he takes care of him when I’m on the road.
  21. I never liked rice growing up. What kind of Chinese girl was I? My mom would force me to eat it but it’s a staple for me now.
  22. I hate onions (green onions, chives, leeks, etc, garlic is okay), sesame seeds, water chestnuts, beans, (except for hummus and edemame, go figure), arugula, peppermint, and…… That’s all I can think of.
  23. I had a secret crush on my bf from the day I first met him four years ago but obviously never acted on it since I was engaged at the time. Funny how things turn out.
  24. My Life’s Mission: “To inspire.” (Thanks, CJ J!)
  25. I spent the last couple weeks intermittently compiling this list in my notebook until I collected the perfect 25 random (or not so random) things listed here. I’m looking forward to reading yours.
